GMMA April 2019 Monthly Newsletter
It’s truly amazing to see how far GMMA has come since its birth. As someone who has been witnessing the ministry grow, I have to confess that it has all been God’s work. He is doing things through GMMA for His own glory. He is bringing the young and old, students and professionals, healthcare and non-healthcare professionals together to work for His kingdom. GMMA is an example of a mission organization successfully collaborating with other mission organizations and community churches.
As much as it is exciting to see how much GMMA has grown, it’s time to think about our transition to the next step. We are no longer a ‘family-sized’ organization where all of our core members can fit in a 15-passenger van to attend a mission trip. We have grown into over 40 college chapters in the U.S, Canada and Australia, over 300 professionals/gap year & graduate students who are actively involved in our ministries, and with other mission organizations and churches turning to us for medical teams.
GMMA does not have many tangible assets. However, God has blessed us with one thing, the most important thing, the ‘people’. I got to know so many God loving and fearing, men and women through GMMA. It invigorates me to see the next generation of mission-minded Christian healthcare professionals growing in faith through GMMA. It is so encouraging to see our GMMA college graduates coming back to serve together again as professionals. GMMA’s investment in people is slowly bearing fruits.
In this day and age of missions, there is a need for people to serve. I am confident that God is making GMMA the ‘human resource center’ for the world of medical missions. I dream of the greatest age of medical missions through GMMA. This is the time to pray and dream a God-sized dream in the Holy Spirit! Let’s press on!
Sang-Hoon Ahn, M.D., M.P.H.
“On March 23 at 5 a.m., a team of 62 consisting of an anesthesiologist, an acupuncturist, a medical oncologist, internists, dentists, undergrad and post-grad students, and Oriental Missions Church members climbed on a tour bus and set off towards Ensenada, Mexico. The students were from campuses along the west coast, from UCI, UCR and UW and were joined by one east coast school, Drexel University. Led by Dr. Sang-Hoon Ahn, the mixed party set up clinic at 4 different locations in and surrounding Ensenada until March 26th. The trip was filled with mishaps (with the bus getting stuck in a puddle on the way to the first clinic) and smelly mornings (the showers stopped working for a bit), but throughout it all, God was present and moving. He was alive in the laughter of the students as they joked around through mealtimes and bus rides, the care of the healthcare professionals as they treated their patients with medicine and prayer, the love of the OMC volunteers as they cooked and fed the hungry team, the passion of the worship team as they lifted their praise to God, the hard work of Missionary Joseph Ahn as he directed the team to each location, and the discipleship between the different age groups. In the cacophony of different cultures and backgrounds, God composed a harmony that glorified Him. Although each member was so uniquely different, the calling to serve and respond to His love for them, bound and united the team as a body of Christ. For many, this journey was an avenue to glorify God through their interests and skills in medicine and a reminder that first and foremost, their passion must be fed by reading and meditating on the Word. In all directions that their lives go, God must be the guide and reason for their pursuit.”

Regional Health Reports
The SoCal chapters of GMMA (UCSD, UCI, UCLA, Biola, Chapman, UCR, and UCSB) had a time of worship and fellowship at the annual intercampus fellowship in Irvine. The day started with a time of praise and worship for the Lord. From there, the fellowship transition into a time of Bible-themed games such as identifying verses from the Bible, bible charades, and picture re-enactment of bible stories/events. After having a great time getting to know each other while playing bible games, members were able to intermingle as they ate delicious Bahn Mi for lunch. Once stomachs were filled and energy revitalized, GMMA students were able to participate in sport relay games. Members from each respective campuses were able to network and connect with members of other SoCal campuses, uniting them under Christ, and creating a sense of camaraderie and a brotherhood and sisterhood of Christ.
Regional Outreach and Needs:
As the month of March brought upon finals and spring break for many of our schools, many chapters were unable to focus their time on outreach. However, now as we enter into a new quarter and the later half of the semester, the West Coast student chapters will be able to serve its local communities once again.
The West Coast is on the search for new West Coast Representatives to serve for the next academic year! As current reps Peter Seo and Matt Lee transition out of their positions, and Caleb Kang stays for another year, we are actively looking for new reps to work alongside Caleb for the 2019-2020 year.
Regional Coordinator Message:
As many chapters are finalizing their officer board applications for those serving in the 2019-20 academic year, we are excited to see, serve, and grow the next generation of GMMA leaders striving to serve His kingdom. We pray for humble hearts that are faithful, available and reachable to serve one another in love. Please join us in prayer as we continue to invest and sow into the next generation of Christ followers.
There was a medical missions conference in Houston called M3 conference that Dr. Mary Roh, Dr. David Roh, and Dr. Yong Sik Kim attended along with couple U of H and Rice students. And there God answered our prayers and brought many interested potential mentors for GMMA. Recently, they had a dinner with those potential members and they had a blessed time. Other chapters are also doing very well and are now in the process of picking the next leaders.
Regional Outreach and Needs:
Please continue praying for each chapter in the Central region as we prayerfully pick the next year leaders. Also please pray for the Texas Regional mission trips, that God will bring health professionals to our trips for we are lacking mentors that are going with us to these trips. Right now, we are in preparation for 2 medical mission trips. Please continue praying that God will use us in mighty ways and walk in a manner worthy of the gospel.
Ephesians 4:1 “Therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called.”
Hello from GMMA on the east coast! Much has been going on in the east coast. We just had a team of students from the University of Florida and UPenn come back from a mission trip to Honduras. While this team was much smaller than the team that went to Honduras during spring break last year, God still showed up in many ways. Hearing testimonies of students and professionals, one is reminded of God’s faithfulness and of how GMMA is more than just an organization: we are family. From 3 students on the team being baptized to deepening relationships made with Hondurans on previous trips, God is definitely moving in the nation of Honduras and using GMMA to make glorious breakthrough. Also, in keeping with tradition, some students from the University of Florida performed the VBS dances and body worship on their campus, holding true to the Great Commission: to go out to ALL NATIONS- including our own- to make His name known. In addition to this praise, all of our chapters now have mission dates!
Regional Outreach and Needs:
As this year flies by, many chapters on the east coast are slowly wrapping things up and preparing for new leadership. Big transitions are on the way for the east coast; please pray that everything will go smoothly and that those in new leadership would be passionate about fulfilling God’s will. Once again, from all of us on the east coast: thank you for your constant love and support. We here on the east coast know that our God is without limits and welcome Him into our hearts and chapters, knowing that His power will surely supply; we look forward to continuing to run this race with all of you by our side!

Western and Toronto: GMMA Canada chapters had a joint GMMA Come and See Conference with Dr. Chung. The theme of the conference was “I am a child of God”. We had an amazing time to praise the Lord, pray together and plan out the next year in great anticipation. Also, It was an amazing time of worship with fellow brothers and sisters that we haven’t seen in a while and greatly missed. Even more thankfully, we had new members come out to the conference and experience Jesus with us! Hallelujah!!
Regional Outreach and Needs:
Western: Please pray for her and the future officer team of GMMA Western!! Additionally, we will start the mission applications process and begin preparing more intensively in the coming months. Please pray for unity and discernment, as well as for the Holy Spirit to fill us as we prepare to just love our Father and worship Him through missions. Lastly, we are praying for our 2 sisters that have been coming out to GMMA meetings recently: Isuri, who is currently Bhuddist but interested in exploring Christiantiy, and Solim who is a newly-devoted Christian. Please pray with us for them to know Christ better and follow Him whole-heartedly with us.
Toronto: Our chapter outreach to Rose of Sharon Long Term Care Facility this month was cancelled, but we were invited to their Volunteer Appreciation Week event. Please continue to pray with us for the upcoming outreach to the facility, the upcoming officer team application and mission preparation for August.
Regional coordinator message:
As we come to an end of the school year, I realized how God has lead us so faithfully throughout this whole year and allowed us to have some valuable time with each other in God’s presence. Please pray for upcoming officer recruitment and mission preparation. Also for heart in all our members to diligently carry out tasks as a student and God loving students in the campus.
“God said to Moses, “I am who I am.[c] This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘I am has sent me to you.’”Exodus 3:11-14
It was good to see old and new faces. We had a short mission report from our mission trip to the Philippines. We are excited to see what God has planned for us in 2019!
There are a few prayer points for Australia.
1. New executive members to have a serving heart
2. Mentors who will invest in this ministry
3. Members who will make this community together
Psalm 46:10 “He says, “Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.”

Professional Activity Highlights
It’s quite inspiring to receive news on how GMMA professionals are serving every week all over the world. The newsletter space cannot encompass all that is happening in the professional group. This issue highlights two professionals who took time off to serve. One is Dr. David Choi, an oncologist, who decided to visit six campus chapters in a week to encourage them. His mission trip to Ethiopia was canceled, so instead, he used the time to visit the students and mentors in four different states. Though it was a busy week of flying every day to a different city to visit different campuses, he shared about how the dedicated student leaders and mentors at each campus blessed him. Mutual encouragement of praying together, laughing and eating together, and so much more confirmed how unique and special the GMMA community is. God’s amazing grace of connecting thousands of healthcare-related students and professionals together across the nation to journey the missional life together is remarkable and thankful beyond words. Another professional, Dr. Grace Roh, dentist, visited Egypt a few weeks ago. She served with the love of Christ in the midst of a challenging environment to bring some relief to patients. Despite the lack of dental chairs and a proper setup, she was not discouraged from serving the refugees and locals!
