“I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” (John 8:12)
GMMA December 2017 Monthly Newsletter
As I was meditating on Mark chapter twelve a few days ago, the Lord spoke to me about the pain He had when he sent His son to us. No one else could save this sinful world. Only His one and only son could bear the weight of the world and redeem sinners like you and me. It was a priceless gift to humanity that changed the course of eternity for those who believe. So, different from the secular Christmas spirit of jingles and parties which deludes the true meaning, may we, the GMMA family, bow our hearts before the Lord with humility and reverence. What incomprehensible epitome of love that illuminates light amid darkness and conquers death; it transforms all things on contact. Reflect on how it transformed you and me! It was this light that drew the shepherds and kings and made their knees fall in adoration. Jesus said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” John 8:12 This light marked the beginning of life and it continues to guide and lead us. This light has been the foundation of everything – nations, communities, churches, families, individuals, and GMMA. We witness the power of this light as we serve together: in the tears of the patients who accept Jesus, in the laughter of an orphan who worships with us, in the prayers we call out together with the missionaries, and in the mounts of testimonies shared by students and professionals during the mission trips. His light is our strength, and His light is the love that keeps us together.
I thank the Lord for drawing us to His light and I pray for His light to continue to shine brightly through us. Let us live out Mathew 5:16, “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.” Truly, Christmas is about Him. Let us go forth like the rays of light this season to spread His light. Let us never forget His great sacrifice and victory, and employ it as the inspiration and the motivation to serve wholeheartedly.
In that vein, I am so thankful for everyone who has given selflessly to volunteer for GMMA. Without you all, GMMA would not be what it is today. I want to thank everyone who has been praying for us. Let’s seek to cover each other in prayer always. Merry Christmas to you and your families and I look forward to praying with you in the New Year. The light is going to shine brighter in 2018 and beyond!
All for HIM.
In His Service,
Peter Chung M.D
On November 11th, Dr. Sanghoon Ahn led 11 other professionals, 6 professional students, 2 post-graduates, and 18 undergraduate students from UCLA and UC Irvine GMMA chapters to a small mountaintop village in Tijuana and established a mobile clinic at a local church to serve the villagers residing there. It was truly a time full of joy and blessings as the team took every opportunity they had throughout the day to share the love and grace of God. The team was reminded that His love extends far beyond our expectations and reaches to all His children.
On the same day, Dr. David Choi led a team of two anesthesiologists, a dentist, and students from UC San Diego and U of Washington to Centro Cristiano Eliazim, a church located in the middle of a trash dump in Tijuana. Pastor Jorge shared with the team that the church had been praying for a medical mission team for the past 15 years! The team learned to recognize that these mission trips are a result of many people praying for many years. They realized they were harvesting what others have sown. Pastor Jorge also shared that when God told him to plant the church, many criticized and mocked him for building a church in the middle of a dump where no one can find it. But God has been bringing in His chosen and beloved people! Also, every Saturday, members of the congregation go out in the neighborhood and knock on doors to share the love of Christ. They actively and urgently evangelize in this way and some from the team got to go out with them and participate.
We thank you for praying for both teams. Please pray for the December SoCal and Texas mission trips to Mexico. Both teams have been prayerfully preparing.
How intimately do we know God’s name? As much as we know God’s name personally, we glorify Him through our prayers. Please lift up the GMMA student chapters and mission efforts for the kingdom of God.

Professional Activity Highlights
As each month, so many of GMMA’s professional members are traveling to visit campuses to encourage, leading mission teams, and serving local ministries. We share the cheer of serving the Lord faithfully in our work places and in our communities. This month we highlight one story of Dr. David Choi. After he finished leading one of the November mission trip with the students of UC Berkeley, UCSD, and U of Washington, he volunteered at one of the headquarter of Samaritan’s Purse Christmas Operation Child. The task was to send over 1,800,000 shoe boxes full of gifts to children of Peru, Philippines, and India before Christmas. He was privileged to pray for all the volunteers during one of the prayer sessions. GMMA looks forward to partnering with the medical mission part of Samaritan’s Purse.
