” If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land.”  (2 Chronicles 7:14)

GMMA March 2020 Monthly Newsletter

Dear GMMA Family

May God keep you and your family in his divine peace during these unprecedented times of trial as a nation and as individuals. We have endured two world wars and many other natural disasters, but we have never experienced a pandemic of this magnitude globally.  One thing is very clear, God created the human race to prosper in harmony with one another.  As many of our friends, family, and colleagues are getting infected or affected by this disease, because of the many unknown variables, tremendous fear is running rampant.  While the majority of patients do recover, the stark number of deaths has put an emotional toll on us all.  While we fight this virus, whether via our work or through prayers, we should keep in mind those who have been affected most by this pandemic.  Let us pray for our fellow brothers and sisters harder than we have ever prayed before.  Now is the time for unity and compassion.

An update to GMMA’s activities, as of early March, the GMMA leadership prayerfully decided to cancel all mission trips and all on-campus ministry has halted.  The leadership recently made the hard decision to postpone the 2020 GMMA National Conference scheduled for July 17-18, 2020 to next year, 2021.

We are engaging into different ways to keep all of us connected in fellowship and prayer during this time of uncertainty. GMMA has organized a structured prayer movement utilizing the Zoom video portal. GMMA is divided into six regions:  Mideast and Northeast, Southeast and Canada, Texas, Northwest, S Cal1, and S Cal2. When informed by your regional leaders, please join them. Be advised of the guide to the prayer schedule.

1.  Each region will conduct prayers meeting on a biweekly basis via zoom.
2.  The paired chapters will conduct a biweekly prayer meeting for their general members via zoom.
3.  GMMA adapted ECHO prayer app so every GMMA member can pray together at 9 PM every day.
4.  The prayer meetings GMMA used to hold every third Sunday of each month at Dr. Choi’s house in LA (ever since we started GMMA), will be expanded to a nationwide prayer meeting via zoom.

While this virus that is oddly shaped like a crown is terrorizing the whole world, I challenge us to look up at the glorious crown our Lord has on his throne.  As we pray and seek him, may his name be lifted high.  2 Chronicles 7:14 states, ” If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land.” I recently spoke with missionary Helen Kim in Haiti, and she told me that after closing all other ministries, she was left with 40 children and 6 staff members at the mission site.  Because of them, she decided to stay in Haiti despite the city closing all hospitals and stores.  She is starting to experience a dry cough and sore throat.  She has no place to go to check herself out since all the Haitian doctors have left the country. There is nothing that I can do to help her. All I could say to her was, let us pray according to the promises of Psalm 91,
“Surely I will save you from the deadly pestilence…he will cover you with his feathers and under his wings that you will find refuge… you will not fear the pestilence….a thousand may fall at your side…. but it will not come near you…. If you make the Most High your dwelling then no harm will befall you, no disaster will come near your tent.”

Family, I pray this Psalm over you.  I pray for everyone’s safety and health, both mentally and physically.  You are not alone.  God is with you and your GMMA family is praying for you.  I pray that we keep God in front and center as he leads us safely through this trial.  I pray we continue to fight the good fight for his kingdom and his glory.  Our mission trips, meetings, and conference will be strengthened by this time of spiritual training and I believe GMMA will rise together unified as we hold hands spiritually around the world through prayer.

In His Service,
Dr. Peter Chung, Sr.

Missions

From January 14 to 22, the GMMA Sydney team went on a very special mission trip to Cambodia with members from the Oceania Medical Missions Association (OMMA). The team of 21 consisting of 6 students and 15 professionals was led by Mr. Taek Ho Lee (podiatrist). We were blessed with a variety of skills and talents: students (nursing, medical, and chiropractic), two junior doctors, four surgeons, two general practitioners, and a hairdresser! In Cambodia, we teamed up with Hebron Hospital to assist with their medical clinics, provide surgery, and perform skits and dances for the waiting room patients. We had one very special moment where we sang for a patient who was undergoing a retroperitoneum cyst resection under spinal anesthesia. Although she did not understand English and the lyrics to the songs, we know she knew our hearts were with her. We hope and pray she will one day know that we were also praying for her to come an receive Jesus Christ. Outside of Hebron Hospital, the team also had two outreach days to a local church in Kandal Srok Sang and school in Kampong Speu. Through this mission trip we were able to experience God’s faithfulness through the hands of missionaries, and His love for his universal church. We pray that the experiences and things learned from his trip may continue to ignite our hearts for Christ in our daily lives back at home.

Regional Health Reports

WEST

Praise report
Although this past month has been a time of uncertainty and fear due to COVID-19, GMMA is launching a nationwide prayer movement. To plan for the prayer movement on the West Coast, West Coast officers, coordinators, and mentors met recently via video call. It was so encouraging to not only plan these meetings but to also pray altogether, in one voice, for our GMMA family and for God’s will to be done. Our prayer is that these meetings will, as Dr. David Choi exhorted us during our meeting, allow us to come before the Lord now more than ever before. Although our West Coast chapters had their last in-person meetings this past month, they will continue to meet during our prayer meetings throughout the semester.

Needs
Because of COVID-19, classes are now online, and campuses have shut down. As for students across the nation, many of our students had to move back home quickly and face other decisions and obstacles throughout the process. Please pray that during this stressful and unforeseen time that they will be reminded of God’s sovereignty and steward their time wisely to draw closer to God. Please pray that our prayer meetings will be God-glorifying.

Regional Coordinator Message:
The spread of COVID-19 has caused me to rethink my intentions in life. Watching plans – which at one point seemed so secure — dissolve so quickly has caused me to realize how much we “do not even know what will happen tomorrow” (James 4:14). Things of this life and world are not guaranteed and it is dangerous to place our security, joy, and comfort in these things that can be stripped away so easily. I pray that this sentiment will draw us to God and his eternal promises all the more.

CENTRAL

Praise report
Texas GMMA was supposed to have their regional retreat in March; however, due to the coronavirus, the meeting got canceled. However, the virus could not stop Texas! We decided to have local meetings in Houston, Dallas, and Austin in place of the retreat. During the meetings we saw a pre-recorded message from the guest speaker who was supposed to come to our retreat, and we had a time of worship and prayer. Though we were a bit disappointed that we couldn’t all come together as one, we were still one in spirit!

Needs
The biggest need right now is prayer. Along with the retreat, two of the Texas mission trips were canceled. I know a lot of people were excited to go and serve, but please pray that God will redirect that passion to serve God here in our own communities.

Regional Coordinator Message:
One thing God has been teaching me and putting in my heart is the phrase “Sovereign Lord.” In the beginning of Acts, Peter and others face persecutions, and they come to God in prayer. The first words out of their mouths were “Sovereign Lord.” This is very timely in light of the virus outbreak that is happening across the globe. We as Christians are believing that God is still sovereign through it all.

AUSTRALIA

Praise Report:
The current and potential executive members gathered for a social hangout. It is exciting to have the new members on board to serve and grow together in Jesus. It is exciting and can’t wait to how 2020 will unfold for GMMA Sydney!

Regional Outreach & Needs:
We have a few prayer requests:
1. Everyone’s safety as the coronavirus becomes pandemic
2. Please for the unity of the members and serve with a joyful heart. Jesus may be at the center of all
3. We pray for the first event of the year “Reboot”. We pray that this may be an opportunity to reach out to others and mark a great start to 2020!

Regional Coordinator Message:
“So that you are not lacking in any gift, as you wait for the revealing of our Lord Jesus Christ, who will sustain you to the end, guiltless in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is faithful, by whom you were called into the fellowship of his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.” 1 Corinthians 1:7-9 ESV

March marks a new start in Sydney, Australia. It is the beginning of a new school year, new jobs, and long-waited promotions. It is an exciting place to be. But I pray that our excitement and zeal may not a flickering fire but may be rooted in Jesus who will sustain us until the end.

Professional Development

Another full month of serving together in various places and positions to live out missional lives for the Lord. Members attended different conferences to support and also share about GMMA. Postgrads and professionals served together to promote the 2020 conference at Bethel church’s Ministry Fair of 2020 in spite of pouring rain!  Many of us joined in ongoing monthly prayer meetings occurring in different regions.  At the west coast prayer meeting, precious missionaries from Burundi, Africa and Beijing, China joined and strengthened the prayer. Burundi missionaries expressed sincere thanks for GMMA’s partnership in serving leprosy patients by providing some medications and first aid supplies.  We were recipient of several surprise donations in February that were huge blessings. Dr. Martin de Campo DDS donated a brand new portable dental unit and supplies. The timing was miraculous as it was provided right before the February mission trip. Another donation were patient tables and examination chair. They were delivered to holding sites with great help from our postgrads and professionals and random helpers out of nowhere that blessed our hearts. God’s amazing grace! We also got a new mission trip t-shirts thanks to Shawn and his company. Mr. Shawn’s gifts to GMMA has been an amazing encouragement.  The t-shirt design winners were from the U of Florida (front) and USC (back).  There were many meetings big and small all over the nation engaging and connecting as GMMA family. We eagerly wait for COVID-19 to pass so our effort of medical mission resumes.  GMMA dedicated March to pray and fast, but it appears this effort will resume onto upcoming months as well.
