GMMA helped me find God and my passions. God brought GMMA to me when I was lost in almost every way. During my first year of college, I struggled with figuring out what my passions were and who I was/wanted to be. Also, I was lost spiritually and emotionally. It was a scary, dark time when I realized this, but I knew I had to find my way back to the right path. Along the way, God gave me an opportunity to go on a GMMA mission trip. During missions, I met so many amazing people that were so on fire for God and missions, the team and even the Hondurans. This made me realize how much I missed God and serving His people. I was so moved by the love and peace I experienced that I decided to get baptized and become a born-again Christian! Also, at that time, I was majoring in management information systems and music. However, after coming back from the mission trip, I realized I wanted to pursue a career in nursing, and now here I am, one year away from becoming a nurse for His people! To me, GMMA is so much more than an organization. I joined because I believe God used GMMA to reach out to me and also for me to reach out to Him and others.

During middle and high school, I found a passion for missions and knew that it was something I wanted to continue to do in college. Growing up, I would listen to the doctors who attended my church talk about their experiences of treating patients, evangelizing to people, and supporting missionaries and local churches on their missions trips. I was, and am still, in awe of how health professionals are able to use their gifts and show God’s love and hope to others. As a Christian who aspired to work in the health field from a young age, I always knew that I wanted to incorporate my profession into serving God. When I came to college, I heard about GMMA from other college students at my church who were also on the pre-health track. I instantly gravitated towards GMMA’s mission statement and the passionate mentors, doctors, and members as I learned more about the organization. I went on my first missions trip with GMMA during my sophomore year and was blessed by the victories and challenges of the experience. Since then I have been on the executive board and am looking forward to what’s to come : )

Through GMMA mission trips, I was able to experience my heart for medicine and missions come together to help heal people both physically and spiritually. I love that the GMMA community shares the love of Christ and allows for vulnerability and growth. I have had the opportunity to listen to so many inspiring testimonies from students and health professionals throughout the nation that have truly helped me grow spiritually and share my testimony to others. I am excited to serve at Emory with my brothers and sisters in Christ with one heart and purpose to glorify God.

GMMA was an opportunity for me to find what it was God wanted me to do with my life. I’ve struggled – and still struggle – a lot with knowing whether the path of medicine is the right one for me. I became most involved after going on one of the medical mission trips to Honduras my sophomore year. During that mission trip, I learned so much about the heart behind medicine, especially from the perspective of a believer. Seeing how the field of medicine was one that integrated so well with the heart God has for people, convinced me to continue on this path. Even after the mission trip, I saw how the organization as a whole focused not on becoming good doctors, but deepening our relationship with God first. Our identity as children of God was held at a priority, even above our pursuits to become medical professionals. Seeing this made me want to continue serving God and others through this organization. So many of us college students have so many questions and are really lost, but I hope that others would be able to experience Jesus in a powerful way through this organization.

I wanted to find a community that was both passionate about serving others and sharing about God’s love. GMMA gives us the opportunity to work in the lives of our campus directly, in the Atlanta area, and even abroad. I love that GMMA reaches different aspects of our world and does not emphasize one as more important than the other. Being able to share the Gospel is important no matter who or how many people we reach. When I felt lost, GMMA gave me a community of brothers and sisters in Christ that encouraged me to chase after our Heavenly Father. It can be easy to feel discouraged when thinking about going into medicine. But through hearing the testimonies about how God can use medicine to grow His Kingdom, I realized that this is something I want to do now and into the future. Through GMMA, we are able to make Jesus known which is such a blessing and so encouraging to know that we are sharing God’s love.

Ever since I began high school, I have always had a heart for missions. However, I always questioned how I could continue to pursue this while attending college. That is when I found GMMA! GMMA has allowed me to continue to serve God though I am a student. GMMA has also reminded me that, though saving physical lives is extremely important, as Christians, we must also understand the urgency and importance of saving spiritual lives. Though people may live healthy lives, without the gospel and Christ, all is meaningless. Thus GMMA has allowed me to serve His people and spread His love in a way that also allows me to grow as an individual and gain experience in the world of medicine.

Ever since the 6th grade, I have gone on countless local and abroad mission trips. I’ve witnessed first-hand how deep the Father’s love is for those who have yet to know Him. Among these opportunities, only one was a designated “medical” mission trip. At the time, I was the youngest member of the team, and although it was amazing to serve in the children’s ministry, I had no opportunities to see how God can show love through healing in prayer and professional practice. Fast forward 5 years later, I stumbled across Emory GMMA’s GBM during the beginning of my first year and felt God’s grace as the president at the time spoke of GMMA’s core values. I admire how GMMA is a club that is first and foremost rooted in Christian foundations and does not compromise faith and prayer for skill or experience. From meeting fellow members in GBMs to going on a retreat with my team just in this last year, I know that God has so much in store for this club in the years to come. This is my first year on exec and I am so humbled and excited to serve!
