Welcome to Global Medical Missions Alliance @ Rice University
We are committed to:
– Provide fellowship and networking opportunities for pre-health students
– Provide summer medical missions opportunities for pre-health students interested in learning more about medical missions
– Provide guidance from Christian mentors for students aspiring to become healthcare professionals dedicated to expanding God’s Kingdom
As I strive to become more like Jesus and make Him known, GMMA has been a builder, a teacher, and a community. A builder in the sense that it provides invaluable opportunity and support to build tender and passionate hearts for missions and His people in our local and global communities. A teacher through the priceless relationships with mentors in medicine and beyond. And a special community that sharpens and spurs one another to run the race together, love God and love our neighbors, and claim victory in the cross.
Looking back at Jesus’ final moments before He ascended into Heaven, He commanded His disciples to be a part of the Great Commission and make disciples of all nations. Throughout my time in GMMA, I have come to understand that as believers, our purpose in life is to bring God glory through sharing the good news with others. I have also learned that my career aspirations are not separate from my own personal faith, but rather, they complement one another: physical healing is a tool to open hearts for spiritual healing. I am excited to see how God can use GMMA here on campus to bring together fellow believers to join up and spread His holy word to those around us.
Interacting with mentors and fellow members from GMMA chapters across the Texas region has inspired me to not only pursue missions beyond borders but more importantly to live out the missions mindset day-to-day. Through their testimonies, God has worked to center my identity more in Christ and less in temporary pursuits—particularly that of medicine. To me, GMMA is thus an investment in a future generation of leaders driven by a dual calling to first and foremost advance the kingdom of God, and second, to advance healthcare in a holistic approach promoting the well-bring of spirit, soul, and body. I’m thrilled to be a part of the movement that is bringing GMMA to Rice and connecting Christians on campus who are seeking to actively serve in a God-centered way to responsible and sustainable efforts both locally and abroad.
How is God working in countries we don’t get to tend to in our daily life? His love is constant and omnipresent, and I got to witness this through GMMA. It’s something about serving in an environment we’re not used to; there’s something different in the air as we praise His name, send prayers up in the presence of those hurting, and laugh between our sentences of broken Spanish. GMMA presents an opportunity to serve outside of our comfort zones—to break us down in foreign places so that we can carry a momentum that we can spread in our own backyards at home. I’m excited for spiritual growth in those who get to spend full days away from home to carry out God’s work.
For me, GMMA is a reflection of our role as Christians in the world. It is the place where I have witnessed God’s loving kindness poured out onto hurting people, and the place where I learned to humble myself to serve the people that God loves so much. I am blessed to have this opportunity where I can live, laugh, and love with my fellow brothers and sisters in Christ, but also give, suffer, and die.
Growing up in a church that was really about the Great Commission, I participated in a ministry that reached out to the unbelievers around us and went on many mission trips close to home and far. From these experiences, I’ve noticed that many people come to know Christ during times of vulnerability. I think GMMA really provides for those who are vulnerable in many ways. We are able to provide them physical, mental, and, most importantly, spiritual healing by pointing to the source of all healing and goodness: God, our Heavenly Father. As Christians, we are all called to be missionaries to spread the Good News. I am excited and blessed that through GMMA, I am able to serve God through missions, to provide complete healing in God’s people and to ultimately grow God’s kingdom! I am also excited for this Rice chapter of GMMA to continue to grow as a family that will be part of God’s work together!
We are called to share the Gospel as well as God’s love, and GMMA accomplishes this purpose in a beautiful manner. Through GMMA, I want to be a part of using medicine as a tool for God’s glory and see for myself how the realms of physical and spiritual health can overlap. Language and distance are only small barriers that can be stepped over in light of God’s great love and His Great Commission. I look forward to being a part of GMMA’s growth here at Rice and eager to see all the hearts moved by Him.
