President’s Greeting

Dear GMMA Family,

Greetings from sunny Southern California!

What an amazing journey it has been to see how God has grown GMMA from 4 chapters in California to more than 40 chapters worldwide in just 5 years! GMMA truly is a movement of God reaching out to the world. It is a privilege to be included in God’s Kingdom work, using God-given talents and passion.
GMMA is not just a health care missions organization but a genuine, loving, multi-generational Christian family where we mentor and pray for each other as we live out our missional life at home or abroad.

As I serve GMMA as the Director of Global Mentors Support, I have had a front row seat witnessing the transformative power of Jesus Christ in our students, mentors, and professionals before, during, and after mission trips. It has been so rewarding to see GMMA students grow up to become GMMA mentors/health care professionals, now leading the mission trips themselves! Praise God!

As a part of a multi-generational family, I not only have mentees but also mentors who serve as my role models.

To that end, I would like to take a moment to thank the many mentors that have dedicated their time and resources to helping GMMA grow up to this point; without these local leaders, our efforts to inspire by example would be impossible.

That being said, although God has brought many faithful mentors from over the U.S., we still experience a severe shortage in Christian health care mentors given the ever-growing chapter count, especially outside of California. Friends, let us model after the Ultimate Mentor, our Lord Jesus Christ! Please join me in this God-driven movement by mentoring the next generation of Kingdom workers in various ways.

May God bless your serving heart!

Michelle Pae Lee, MD
Director of Global Mentors Support

In 2016 we launched AWAY4G – A Week A Year For God to encourage all members to go on a mission trip at least once a year.  Thankfully, many students and professionals of GMMA attend more than one mission trip per year.  Medical mission trips are necessary and are welcomed at every site. One trip per year can make a rewarding difference to a needy site. When 500 members go at different times of the year to repeated sites, it provides ongoing services for the local missionaries. This is one of the ways GMMA is striving to be a helping hand to the long term missionaries around the world.  Thank you to all the students and professionals. Please continue to set aside time to be a part of an ongoing team and be blessed by being His healing agent. Below are mission trip schedules for the regions of GMMA. Remember to check our mission partners as well on the website.  Professionals can be a blessing to our local church and ministry partners when they join in as the medical staff for their trips!

Regional Health Reports

Praise Report:
Oct 3-6, GMMA coordinators and mentors from across the nation gathered at JAMA’s Global Campus in Lindale, Texas to receive training in community health evangelism. It was a great time of fellowship, training, and planning for GMMA’s vision. Praise God for providing us with opportunities and resources to learn how to serve Him better.
Throughout October, students from Pomona, USC, and Berkeley have been training for the upcoming Mexico mission trip on Oct 26 led by Dr. Iris Lee – the first West Coast mission trip of this school year! Praise God.

Regional Outreach & Needs:
Please pray for UCLA as they prepare to launch their local missions as well as our other chapters who are already serving locally or planning to serve. Please pray for the students attending the October and November mission trips, that they may know God and serve Him well. As Dr. Chung has visited some of our chapters and exhorted them in the importance of QT accountability and remaining in the Word, please pray for spiritual discipline, vulnerability, and softened hearts for our West Coast chapters.

Regional Coordinator Message:
“9 “And you, my son Solomon, acknowledge the God of your father, and serve him with wholehearted devotion and with a willing mind, for the Lord searches every heart and understands every desire and every thought.” (1 Chron 28:9)
This passage from a recent QT convicted me greatly. These were David’s words to his son Solomon. David wanted to build a temple for God, but God appointed Solomon to do so. Instead of pitying my situation, I need to be thankful in whatever circumstance God has placed me in.
Lord, I pray that you allow me and all of our GMMA members to, like David, give up everything we desire and plan for in order to submit to God’s greater plan. Let us trust in His wisdom and not our own.

Praise Report:
October has been an amazing month for the Central Region. Dr. Chung came to Texas from September 28th to October 2nd to visit all the Texas chapters. During each chapter visit, Dr. Chung emphasized the importance of listening to the voice of God and being guided by His voice. After the meeting with Dr. Chung, each chapter officer board started a QT chain to keep each other accountable. As our leaders equip themselves with the Word of God and prayer, I am sure that the evil one will not stand still. Please pray for divine protection for each chapter leaders in the Central region (UT Austin, A&M, Baylor, Rice, TWU, U of H, UT Dallas, Northwestern).

Regional Outreach & Needs:
Our region started preparing for our January trip to Mexico. The majority of our original members and leaders in the Central Region have graduated, so this team will be led by new leaders (Kiujoy Kokko, Joonoh Lee, and Amber Lee). Please pray for these new leaders that God will use them humbly yet mightily.

Regional Coordinator Message:
Lastly, this is my second year serving as the regional coordinator for the Central Region. It truly has been so wonderful and humbling to see the growth of the Central Region. One thing God has been teaching me through His word and through others is that all good things come from God not from me or any other leaders. All honor and glory to our heavenly Abba Father.

Praise Report:
This month, we finally finished up all of the leadership retreats, with Florida chapters meeting on October 12. Dr. Chung has started his tour of the East Coast chapter, visiting the chapters in GA and the Northeast. This month has been very exciting, as the East Coast continues to grow with  the addition of four possible new chapters — Vanderbilt, Nova Southeastern, Hopkins, and Princeton. Please pray for the members seeking to start GMMA at their universities, that they would not be discouraged by any challenges and that they would be excited to see how God will use them to be salt and light on their campuses.

Regional Outreach & Needs:
As the semester picks up, it is very easy for our students to get overwhelmed and burnt out. Please pray that they would be wise with how they manage their time, that they would rely on God in times of weakness, and that they would be as diligent with taking care of their physical and mental health as they are with their spiritual health.

Regional Coordinator Message:
Coming in as one of the new regional coordinators for this region, there are times where I feel the pressure to stay on top of everything, but seeing how God has already been working on each campus the past couple of months has really encouraged me to look beyond what man can do and fix my eyes on the limitless power of God’s work!

Professional Development

GMMA president, Dr. Chung, has been traveling nonstop since September to visit campus chapter officers.  He is flying and driving to pray with them and encourage their commitment to serve as leaders of their chapters. During September, many of the California chapters were able to meet with him. How thankful we are of his dedication and his love for the students. Along with Dr. Chung, we recognized all the campus chapter mentors who set aside time to meet with the officer and attend the campus meetings.  In the picture below is Dr. Steve Lee, pharmacist, mentor of UCI meeting with the officers as well as the Chapman mentor.  In addition, we recognize and thank all of the regional coordinators for their amazing servanthood. Below are just a few of the pictures.
Some of the other activities include board members traveling abroad to teach medical school students with His love, distributing donations to missionaries, attending planning meetings for the conference, and of course gathering to pray together. Also, our past board chairman, Dr. Chun, published a book on blessings experienced during 40+ years of short-term medical missions! We recognize Dr. Chun’s unceasing dedication to honor God through all that God allowed him to be as one of His beloved. Congratulations!
