How linear motion products are changing DIY projects and small-scale automation

I’ve been messing around with DIY stuff for years, mostly basic woodworking and a bit of electronics, but lately I keep seeing people add motion to everything. Adjustable benches, sliding panels, even small automated storage ideas. It feels like linear motion gear is making projects that used to feel “industrial” way more accessible. I recently tried to automate a small workbench lift in my garage and realized how much easier this stuff has become compared to even five years ago. Curious how others see it — is this just a trend, or are linear systems really changing how we build things at home and in small workshops?

From my side, it’s definitely more than a trend. Once I started using proper linear motion parts, my projects went from clunky experiments to something that actually felt polished. I’ve used actuators and control boxes from different places, but having a wide range of linear products https://www.progressiveautomations.com/ in one ecosystem makes planning way easier. I added automation to a hidden cabinet and later a height-adjustable table, and both times the biggest win was reliability. No weird hacks, no constant recalibration. My advice is to start small, learn how load ratings and speed affect your design, and then scale up once you’re comfortable.
