Challenges people face when collecting old Latvian family documents

I’ve been trying to piece together my Latvian family history so I can finally apply for citizenship by descent, but collecting the actual documents is turning out way harder than I expected. Some records from the 1930s and 1940s are either missing or written in handwriting that’s almost impossible to read, and the archives don’t always respond quickly. Has anyone here managed to deal with these kinds of gaps? I’m curious how others handled missing birth records or name-spelling inconsistencies, because I’m hitting a bit of a wall with it.

I went through something similar last year, so I get the frustration. In my case the biggest issue was that my great-grandfather’s surname appears in three different spellings depending on the decade, and at first it looked like completely unrelated people. What helped was going through parish records chronologically rather than trying to match names immediately. Also, when I realized I might be missing a key document, I contacted the specialists at latvian citizenship by descent because they know how to track down records from the old regional archives that aren’t digitized yet. They explained that sometimes the documents survive under the person’s household number rather than the name, so the archive search needs to be structured differently. That tiny detail saved me weeks. If you’re stuck because of handwriting or gaps, it may be worth asking them how to approach the search in your region—at least to understand whether the documents realistically still exist. It’s not a quick process, but once the pattern becomes clear, the whole family line starts making more sense.
